Audi A8

The Audi A8 is a luxury car and the successor of the Audi V8. Much of its technology components will also use the VW Phaeton.

Audi's way into the upper class began in 1979 with the Audi 200 (type 43), based on the Audi 100 C2. 1983 as a luxury version of the new Audi 100 C3 followed, the Audi 200 of the 44th type Came in 1988 with the Audi's first stand-alone V8 luxury model on the market. But this was - despite technically independent new construction - an offshoot of the Audi 100 Design features that position, among other things, the spaciousness and comfort, yet could not measure with those of competitors in the luxury class. It was these models, especially through the quattro but could gain a wide acceptance as a competitive offer for Mercedes-Benz or BMW products, learned these first three models but not yet.

It was not until mid-1994 with the A8, Audi presented a completely separate upper-class model. To compete in this segment, alongside the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series can alternatively he was equipped with some technical features which are not offered the competition.

This included the all-wheel drive "Quattro" and the world's first aluminum body in a production vehicle in the luxury class. Criticism of the car had to have always fallen in the comfort chapter - a tribute to the more athletic overall design.

As a base engine, a 2.8 liter gasoline engine with six cylinders were used. The other end of the W12 engine line-marked cylinders. The majority of the buyers ordered the 8-cylinder with 4.2 liters of displacement, from which even the unashamedly sporting offshoot is "S8". The first diesel-powered A8 (2.5 TDI) was found with his performance of 110 kW (150 hp) as underpowered and was replaced by model year 2000 by a version with 132 kW (180 hp). That same year saw the launch of the first eight-cylinder diesel (TDI) as an initial trend for the large volume still continuing boom in diesel engines in the luxury class.

After eight years of construction, the internal D2-called Ur-A8 was launched in November 2002 (model 2003) detached from the D3. The aim of the new development was to reduce the perceived strengths while maintaining good comfort weakness of the A8. A litter is the new A8, despite air suspension will not, the buyers seemed not to disturb, however: in 2008 occupied the A8 in the luxury segment, with 4446 vehicles registered number 2 of the German registration statistics, behind the Mercedes S-Class (8077 units) and in front of the BMW 7 Series with 4226 vehicles.

The engine program has been revised, see also the engines of type D3. As a new base engine in the 2.8-liter six-cylinder was used with 154 kW (210 hp), while the power was increased on the 4.2-liter eight-cylinder engine to 257 kW (350 hp). The 6.0-liter W12-cylinder remained in the program it came up with a V10 with 331 kW (450 hp), which remains subject to the S8. Most A8 buyers opt for a diesel, however: 2006 was introduced with the 4.2 TDI 240 kW (326 hp) than it was then the world's strongest diesel engine in a production sedan.

Audi showed the new-generation luxury sedan only at the Geneva Motor Show 2010. Overall, the A8 grew by ten centimeters to 5.15 meters. Formally, the Audi A8 remains almost unchanged, only the distinct lateral line is new Tornado. the basic version of the Audi A8 with the 2.8-liter FSI six-cylinder engine came in 2010 with front wheel drive and a CVT (Multitronic) allowed the longitudinal matrix in a space-saving design -. the front axle of the Audi is a 15 centimeters stored further forward. This results in an improved weight distribution also.
